A Sydney couple reveals ups and downs of Cockatoo Island’s history over 15 years

The caretakers of the UNESCO-listed Kakatu Island of Sydney are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the organization.

Marie Palmer, who along with husband Barry McDonald volunteered for the Harbor Trust for 15 years, shared with Jim Wilson and his listeners a bit of the story.

“Cockatoo Island was probably a rendezvous for the peoples of the First Nations, as several clans descend to the water at that point.

“We’re doing more research right now along with the indigenous communities, and we’ll find out more.”

Post-colonization, convicts were moved to Norfolk Island in 1839.

“They had to build their own prison.”
