Those cries you hear, similar to a crying banshee, come from Democrats. They are convinced the world is over after Terry McAuliffe lost the governor’s race in Virginia.
The sneers you hear are from the fascists who believe Virginia’s election signals that they are on their way to recapturing the former U.S. democracy in the name of its demented ruler, Donald Trump.
As Mary Trump said recently in my podcast “Just Ask the Question“The GOP is working hard to make sure that the minority rules, the rule books are all thrown out and the world will be safe for fascism, courtesy of her uncle Donald. That party must be burned to the ground,” she said.
Honestly, it seems that Donald has already done that and set up a new party dedicated to electoral repression, misogyny, racism and fascism.
In Virginia, this has also led to a Republican party, according to state lawmaker Danica Roem, inhabited by those who say the biggest problem facing voters is a set of “undocumented, transgender teens who go out in bathrooms teaching each other critical race theory while they. earn Sharia law diplomas. “
Of course, no one has been happier with the election results than Trump, who – not being able to encrypt his brain feces on a whim – is now publishing “Press Releases” about them. Few media bother to publish his serpentine, mind-numbing babel, thus saving the world considerable dyspepsia, tremors and death metal rallying. Trump, meanwhile, is as dizzying as an eight-year-old blowing nitroxide when he sees his grand plan come true.
This grand plan includes winning state and local races, clearing the GOP of Trump disbelievers, and enacting laws, rules, and procedures that will enable Trump, or any other Republican, to win elections in 2022 and 2024, whether they actually get it or not. majority of the votes.
“They have a limited window of opportunity,” Mary Trump explained. “They know they are the minority party and they are desperate to hold on to power.” If Republicans can rule the game, they will almost certainly do the feat. If they can’t, then they won’t.
But we are certainly at an inflection point in this country, and the Democrats have a narrow window to prevent the Republicans from destroying what remains of our democracy. And not only will our country suffer if our democracy ceases to exist. That will lead to a downward spiral for the whole world.
The Democrats’ cry comes from the fact that they see the loss of Terry McAuliffe as a prediction of the apocalypse. “Usually we say that if we get the vote, then we win because there are more of us than they are,” Roem explained. “That didn’t happen and we had a big turnout.”
Virginia turned out more than 50 percent of the vote, but that still means a minority of registered voters elected its governor. It is anathema to democracy that we consider voter turnout of 50 to 60 percent to be terrible.
Anyway, McAuliffe’s loss only portends disaster if the Democrats continue to run races like McAuliffe did – very badly. He has never been the best Democratic candidate for governor, as former governor Doug Wilder said in 2020. Senior Democrats told me the same thing this week. “He sucked. He smelled bad,” one prominent Virginia employee explained to me. “That’s what condemned his campaign.” Imagine how bad he had to lose against an accused racist and sexist.
The problem is that on a national scale, most Democrats from top to bottom are just as ineffective as McAuliffe. “I have the best ideas and the other guy is sexist, selfish, lying, hypocritical mustache” means little in a world where the truth often takes a back seat to intimidation, character murder and conspiracy theories. Democrats often don’t beat us where we live, but beat us because they don’t live where they think we should.
Roem found another way. I have known her for a long time and once hired her as a city editor for a newspaper I directed. She not only won re-election as a Democrat, she won police districts that Terry McAuliffe loss.
She says that when she spoke with some of those North Virginia voters who returned her to the House of Delegates, they said they thought the Democratic Party was filled with Satan-loving communists, but added, “They haven’t reached Roem yet. . ”Right-wing voters and swing voters who turned against the Democrat at the top of the ballot voted low for a liberal, thrash-metal-loving, transgender female musician, giving her a third term in Richmond.
That probably prompted Robert E. Lee to turn in his grave – which would be the most productive thing he had ever done for his country, living or dead.
Roem was re-elected doing something that too many Democrats (and Republicans) have conveniently forgotten; she works for her items. Roem first won an election against a far-right Republican who slandered her sexual identity and ignored the issues. Roem didn’t make a big deal out of who she was, but campaigned on what she could do, promising to take care of a traffic problem that had plagued North Virginia for years, and her predecessor did nothing about it.
She campaigned for public service and she won. She won re-election as the state’s first transgender female legislator by providing needed services. Her constituents have given enough thought to her efforts to keep her in office – even if some of them don’t like her.
That is the key to survival on a national scale for Democrats. Republicans do not serve the public good. They hunt down the public through false cultural wars to retain power, while providing little or no service to the people they are supposed to represent.
We suffered through four years of “Infrastructure Week” at the White House under Trump, in which nothing was done. The GOP continues to try to thwart Biden’s attempts to rebuild the nation’s crumbling infrastructure. Health care, parental leave – all those issues that are supported by an overwhelming majority of Americans, the Republicans are blocking. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has repeatedly said his goal is to thwart a Democratic president. The GOP over the years has opposed social security, civil rights, and every progressive idea we now take for granted and valued as Americans.
The GOP simply cannot govern. It relinquished any pretext of rule to ensure autocratic, fascist control to serve its billionaire rulers. Republicans preach that we should stand up with our boots on, but be sure to forget to mention that or often relied on student loans and government assistance to get where they are. Mary Trump is right about what should happen to that political party of fascists.
But Democrats also continue to misunderstand the American people. You can call on Republicans for their hatred and bigotry and that will please your loyalists – but if you really want to convert voters, then be Danica.
Tip O’Neill, the House’s political heavyweight former speaker, famously said, “All politics is local.” So what can the National Democrats learn from a local legislative race in North Virginia?
Public service. Democrats must stop arguing for their justice and start hammering their service to everyone – even the people who hate them. That makes a difference.
Yes, McAuliffe’s defeat in Virginia is a wake-up call for Democrats. But they should not misinterpret what it really means. Mary Trump tweeted Wednesday, “We have to get angry” and followed it up with “AND CHANNEL our anger.”
Former Republican Congressman Joe Walsh said Wednesday, “As someone who used to actively practice in all of these cultural warfare issues and intimately understand it, I think maybe I’ll become a Democrat to help Democrats learn how to fight a Republican fear movement and so on. Win the cultural wars actually persuading voters. “
That’s right. Anger without action is pointless, and bad messaging kills the Democrats. To succeed, they should stop telling us how fair they are and start telling us what they have done, and what they intend to do. Don’t say it just once: Beat that drum loudly, consistently and with renewed vigor and you’ll be able to beat the Republicans. Whenever they engage in character murder, keep them on target. Democrats always end up playing the game according to Republican rules, and they’re bad at it. Also, as Donald Trump has shown us, you can discard the damn playbook and pretend to be a victim and a winner in one breath – while never serving the American public and taking care of them all the time.
This leads to frustration, confusion and voter malaise. There is no way to argue with an idiot who will drag you down into the gutter and beat you to death with his stupidity. Stay out of that battle. It leads voters to shout that critical race theory is the key issue in voting, while confessing that they don’t actually know what critical race theory is.
Do you want to reach voters? “What have you been doing to me lately?” is the final cry of the voters. The GOP can’t answer that question, so they convince their voters that it’s a cultural war, or it’s about conspiracy, victimization, immigration, socialism, and the destruction of the American way of life – exactly what they’re doing.
Democrats are falling on their own swords waging this idiotic culture war without realizing what they are doing better than the Republicans: It’s about public service, stupid.
