COP26: Scott Morrison has pressured to set more ambitious climate targets for 2030

Australia is among a number of countries that are being ordered to set a more ambitious emission reduction target for 2030 according to a draft decision paper published at the COP26 climate summit.

The document – which will be used as a draft for final negotiations – will give nations an additional 12 months to update their targets and find further cuts.

It also calls on countries to remove coal and subsidies for fossil fuels and accelerate plans to cut greenhouse gases by next year.

Australia has committed to a net zero target of 2050 but has refused to increase its 2030 target by 26 to 28 per cent.
