On The voice The live top 13 results of season 21 show on Tuesday, 10 contestants advanced by the public vote, after which the three lowest voters turned out for the Instant Save. And the most surprising singer to land in those lower three was undoubtedly Team Kelly Gymani’s fiery soul stylist, who has consistently delivered since she turned four chairs with her first performance.
Back during the Blind Auditions, Gymani made the “pov” of new coach Ariana Grande so completely his own that Ariana actually said to her, “That’s yours song now. Take it! ” And from that important moment, Gymani won the first position of the Live Finals, John Legend compared her to the almighty Jazmine Sullivan, and Kelly Clarkson even said that Gymani’s voice is “why this show exists.”
So seeing this power risky going home this week – before even making the top 10 – was shocking. In addition to Gymani’s impeccable overall record, on Monday the top 13 shows she returned to her church roots with a commanding performance of For King & Country’s Christian pop band “God Only Knows,” backed by an evangelical choir, and I assumed. that would be a big hit with conservative viewers. (Religious performances have historically worked well The voice – think of Craig Wayne Boyd’s “The Old Rugged Cross”, Meghan Linsey’s “Amazing Grace”, Paxton Ingram’s “Break Every Chain” and at least three performances by Jordan Smith.)
Gymani’s coach seemed more surprised than anyone by this result. “Not on my best vocal day could I sing as much rad as you. You are so incredible. I have no idea how you are in the bottom three. I literally don’t. It breaks my mind. “I’ve been doing this for 20 years, and you inspire me and make me want to sing better, and you push me,” Kelly stated, repeatedly begging the United States to vote for Gymani through next week’s 11-round.
Gymani would face stiff competition from the other two contestants singing for the Instant Save: Team Ariana Ryleigh Plank’s high-pop-rock firecracker (my personal favorite contestant of Season 21) and Team Legend’s diva Shadale. But it was not tute how surprising to see any of them for elimination (though Team Ariana Jim & Sasha Allen’s compatible father / son duo really should be in the lower three instead). Ryleigh, despite seemingly possessing all the elements of a budding superstar, was always a subordinate and somehow didn’t connect with viewers – she had to be rescued by Ariana last week. Meanwhile, Shadale started as a first-place finisher, but her weird 80s rock song this week, Tom Cochran’s “Life Is a Highway,” was clearly her downfall. And clearly Shadale knew it was her udoing as she looked grumpy and defeated before host Carson Daly even finished reading Tuesday’s results.
That said, any of these talented women had a chance to win the Savings. But Shadale seemed discarded by the events of the week, and her cover of Faith Hill’s “Breathe” – another weird song selection, especially at this do-or-die moment – began to be extremely shaky. I almost thought she couldn’t hear herself – that’s how it was ke rough. She regained her callus a bit before the end of the song, but it was too little, too late. As for Ryleigh, I assumed that her vampire, prowly grumpy, and supremely self-confident cover from her own “Dangerous Woman” coach would galvanize the Arianators to shake the vote, but that apparently wasn’t the case.
When Gymani epicly jazzed her way through a furious and fearless version of Anita Baker’s “Sweet Love,” she was the real highlight of the night. Even Carson had to remark later, “That was a ethos. ” And so, Gymani won the public vote, so sweetly bitterly sending Shadale and Ryleigh home.
But even if Gymani didn’t win the Instant Save this week, she was already a winner at alive, when before finding out her fate she impertinently said to Kelly, “I feel like you are my best friend. If you want to be, we can be best friends!” To this, Kelly enthusiastically exclaimed without missing a beat, “We is best friends! … It’s an incredible thing to be able to call you a friend. You can sing with me anytime, anytime. ”
