GARY, Ind (CBS) – Two people were shot, one fatally, outside Gary church after a funeral Saturday afternoon.
According to police, officers responded to a call at 2:19 pm for a man shot in the 600 block of Rhode Island Court. While on the road, they received a call from another person shot. When they arrived, officers found an irresponsible man outside the church and another man who had been shot inside the church.
The shooting took place in the parking lot of St. Monica and Luke Catholic Church at 645 Rhode Island Court in Gary, said a church secretary.
The church secretary said the shooting took place after an out-of-place burial when people had just arrived at the church for a compassion meal. The people were just getting ready to eat when they heard the shots, ran into a room and barricaded the door.
The Gary Fire Department transported both victims to Methodist Northlake for their injuries where one of the victims, a 41-year-old man from Merrillville died. The second victim, a 41-year-old man from Gary, was stabilized.
According to police, during the burial, an unidentified man began firing into the crowd and then fled on foot.
