Only gymnasiums in high schools will initially be available for outside groups, as elementary schools are prioritized by the board for potential use as COVID-19 vaccine clinics for children. Additionally, the OCDSB explained, high schools have more staff to support a return to community use.

Community use of gyms will be limited to those who are fully vaccinated, and the board will contact prior licensors who may want to renew their use. Priority will be given to permits for youth over 12 years of age, and non-profit groups. “We are not distracting permits for new customers for these spaces at the moment,” the board added.

The introduction of community use in its gymnasiums, the board said, is expected to include elementary schools in early 2022.
